Slight spoilers for Star Wars: Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith, Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren, Star Wars: Lando, and Star Wars: Empire Ascendant
Charles Soule has become one of the most accomplished writers in the new line of canon Star Wars comics being published by Marvel Comics. Having a large array of miniseries and ongoing series, Soule has been writing under Lucasfilm for around five years starting in 2015 and continuing to new heights at the beginning of this new decade. His plots have a perfect mix of showcasing the old and making room for new characters and ideas. Soule can connect many of these ideas through stories of different tones, making him a master of almost any kind of story he creates. His most popular books see him dealing with the mysterious and dark ways of the force, but Soule also deals with the hopeful rebellions and their plight against the controlling evils of the galaxy. Both show the many ways Soule contributes to the vast lore of the Star Wars universe.

The most famous Charles Soule comic in the Star Wars universe has to be Star Wars: Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith. The 25-issue ongoing from 2017 gained traction for its deep lore of the period between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope and its exploration of the dark side of the force. The details in this series lay a good summary of how the force is used in many of Soule’s comics, a library of information that is revealed to readers the same way it is to the characters who discover these secrets in the stories. Main characters are showed almost as if they are the audience, learning of this deep history that they’ve never seen the likes of before.

Soule also links his lore between different books, such as the occurring Lord Momin (seen in Star Wars: Lando and Star Wars: Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith) who serves as a connection to the ways of the force from many centuries ago.

Another occurring topic is the cache of Jocasta Nu (seen in Star Wars: Dark Lord of the Sith and Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren) which serves as a connection to hope and a shift to the knowledge of the light side, shown when Luke Skywalker finds the cache and later mentions the importance of this find. This shows the idea of hope hidden within the darkness, hope that Soule builds upon in his other stories.

The books Soule writes focusing on the light in the galaxy and the fight of the rebels may be less noticed in the Star Wars community, but they provide some of the best stories in the new canon catalogue. Books like Star Wars: Poe Dameron and stories like An Echo of Victory provide a deeper look into the everyday people in the era spanning rebellions, those who make up the belly of resistance and keeps it alive that mostly goes unexplored in the saga films. Soule also works to connect the Rebellion and the Resistance through his comics, mostly through heritage. Not only does he show those who carried over from the Resistance to fight for the ideals they fought for back in the Rebellion, but he’ll also show the children of rebellion fighting for what their parents once fought for.

One of the best examples of this is the story of Poe Dameron and his parents, Kes Dameron and Shara Bey. After looking into the life of the young freedom fighter in Star Wars: Poe Dameron, Soule decided to give a closer look into Poe’s parents in his new ongoing and its prelude, Star Wars: Empire Ascendant. This theme of family and its close bond fit excruciatingly well into the larger Star Wars mythos and compliments the feel of the interconnected Skywalker Saga.

Soule provides an antithesis to the honorary children of prior heroes when he delves into Ben Solo and his journey into becoming Kylo Ren. Here we see everything that usually brings the new generation to follow in the footsteps of their parents and fight in the Resistance, like family name and heritage, and using that as the pinnacle moments that help lead young Ben down the dark path of the force. By doing this, Soule provides two opposing outcomes of the same situation to show that not everything will go the way it seems they will go, a perfect summary of the tales he tells and the way he perfectly balances the light and the dark with each other.
Charles Soule continues to thrive in this new age of Star Wars comics. Just like how he was here during its baby steps, Soule has taken the leading position in this new phase of canon comics with the reigns of the frontrunning ongoing series Star Wars that was revived earlier this month and looks to be running possibly as long as its predecessor, which ran for an incredible four years. His new miniseries Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren also appears to be doing well with both issues that have released so far selling out. Aside from monetary reasons, the comic also has provided new light on Ben Solo’s early days and his moments right on the brink of the dark side, as well as answering questions many fans have had over the events that took place before the start of the Sequel Trilogy. The most anticipated release of Soule in the makings is his collaboration with many other famous Star Wars authors for Project Luminous, a project that is just as mysterious as it is speculated by the fans awaiting its release. No matter how you see it, Charles Soule plays a huge role in the Star Wars comic universe and is looking to take a step into the larger Star Wars mythology.
